Plain carvingEvery piece starts plain: carved, sanded and primed until it is smooth.
Base coatA warm base coat goes on first. If the leaf ever leaves a gap, it shows warm, never white.
SizeNext, the size: a thin glue, left until it is just tacky enough to grip the leaf.
LeafThe leaf goes on one square at a time. It is so thin that a breath can lift it.
BurnishEach square is pressed into every curve, then burnished until it holds the light.

StudioDarts is a family of traditional artists, keeping age-old techniques alive with a modern touch. From our studios in Chennai and Hyderabad we create gold and silver leafing, sculpture, murals, carving and handcrafted art, and in March 2027 we open our first studio outside India, in Dubai.

For a residence in Houston, Texas, more than 15,000 km from our Chennai studio, our artists created a hand-painted palace mural, a carved ceiling panel, gold leaf doors, a relief artwork, a carved home temple and a gold design on a black marble dining table.
